How to make Puff Puff

In this article, we would be talking about another great Nigerian snacks called the puff puff. 

Puff Puff - It's not only a food popular to Nigeria but also some west west African countries. The puff puff is easy to eat and can be taken during the afternoon as Lunch.




When I was a child, you know I love talking about myself a whole lot. I could eat snacks the whole day without getting freaked out. Puff puff was one of my favourite snacks.

Most times, I stare with mouth agape as my mom would mix the ingredients diligently and squeeze her hand to allow the mixture slip into the pan of oil to fry.

Well, I'm all grown now and I can say I'm a professional in puff puff making. Thanks to mum.

PUFF PUFF


The puff puff is a widely eaten Western snacks known by different names depending on the geographical location. In Camaroun, it's called puff puff like wise Nigeria, in Ghana, it's called togbei and surprisingly, in French it's called beignet. The major ingredients used in the preparation includes, here's some: Flour, sugar, yeast, water, salt and oil.

INGREDIENTS USED IN MAKING PUFF PUFF


Here, I'll be explaining the use of some of this ingredients. Although not in full details.

• Flour - It's the major ingredient. It's used for the mixing process. This is what forms the dough that we fry and eat.

• Yeast/baking powder - We know that this ingredient is a rising agent. It's added to the dough to make it rise.

• Salt - The general purpose of salt is to give taste. Pinch of salt is adds to the mixture to give it taste.

• Sugar - It's used as a sweetner

• Vegetable oil - It's used for frying the mixture Before it would be good for consumption.

• Warm water - Cold water isn't used to mix puff puff ingredients.

EQUIPMENTS NEEDED


• Bowl - For mixing the ingredients

• Towel - For covering the mixture so that it can rise

• Gas/stove - Used as heat for frying

• Frying pan - Used for frying

• Spatula - Used for turning the mixture

PROCEDURES IN MAKING PUFF PUFF


• Mix the salt, sugar, water and yeast in a bowl and leave for a while

• Add flour to the mixture in step one 

• Cover the mixture with a towel or cover and allow to rise

• Pour oil into the frying pan. Put enough oil because we are going to ne doing deep frying

• You can check the heat of the oil by putting a small mixture into the oil. If the mixture stays at the bottom, then the oil is not hot enough.

• Leave oil to get hot

• Fry your puff puff

For a better shape and eveness, there are several methods you put your mixture into the oil.

 - Hand method: Using your hand, take a little of the mixture and squeeze your hand. Let the mixture come out from in between your thumb and the finger next to it.

 - Spoon method: You can also use a small spoon to pour the mixture into the hot oil. Let it be in the shape of a ball.

• Fry and keep checking the colour. Fry for at least three minutes, until it turns golden brown in colour.

• Flip the puff while it's in the oil to make sure everywhere is evenly fried.

• Use a perforated spoon to remove the puff puff from the oil. This is to drain the oil away. If you don't have a perforated spoon, put the puff puff in a sieve.

• You can coat the puff puff with sugar. Put sugar in a bowl and roll up the puff.


Here we go again, our puff puff is set and yummy.
